Friday night my friend Brooke and I went over to the Dead Cat for their charity show. A few days before artist Tom West had told me about the opening and as I’ve mentioned before, when I get that kind of invitation, I always go. Even though Dead Cat can be kind of obscurely located, they have a great space and its a nice vibe when you walk in their door. They charged a $10 cover, but the drinks were unlimited. It’s not such a bad deal.
When we arrived they were just starting the night’s musical entertainment, so it was still quiet enough to walk around and talk in front of the collection of decorated vinyl records, which really lead me to do one dangerous lovely thing, shop. Unlike other charity events which do stupid things like silent auctions, this was a first come first serve kind with all proceeds going to Rhode Island Charity Baseball. Tom spent most of the night walking around with a list of all the prices and a power drill. If you knew the number of the record, Tom could easily tell you the price. After you purchased your record, Tom unscrewed the albums from the wall and that was it. It’s actually a better idea to do it this way, even though if you arrive very late to the event you don’t get to see everything, but that’s a personal choice to be late right?
A fun aspect to the evening was getting to see part of Tom West’s new project. Last year he created kind of a spoof piece where he ran for artist of Providence. This year, he’s taking the next step with this project and turning it into a full blown campaign and is seeking out other artists to run against him. Many of the albums had a Tom West for Artist 2012 slogans painted on them. He’s not joking around either. He has the backing of AS220, where Bert Crenca may run against him and there may be debates and all sorts of activities come election time in November. It’s an excellent and fun idea that I fully support.
I spoke to Ben about the Dead Cat’s relocation again and the wheels are in motion. They are working on completing the space which will be in Olneyville Square near Dirt Palace and Fete. We won’t get to see the new space anytime soon though. The next event at Dead Cat will be Feb 11 and will involve a fashion theme. Can’t wait!
